In the time of market full of fierce competition,any organization needs much more than before those outstanding professionals who are able to manifest high-level performance. Therefore,what criteria we should adopt to select professionals and how to train them have attracted more and more attention from human resources experts and organizational behavior specialists. Competence is an integral ability which can predict employees'performance, and one of the hot spots in research fields such as Management,Industrial and Organizational Psychology,Human Resources Management in the last 30 years.The purpose of this research is to explore the competency model of nurse managers in the hospitals,to construct the nurse manager competency questionnaire and assess the level of the nurse manager competency. Behavior event interview and statistical techniques are used in this study, the following conclusions are induced:1. The constructed competency models of nurse managers include the traits of excellent nurse managers. The excellent nurse managers own some specific traits,such as Achievement orientation,Resilience,Initiative, Influence,Attention to detail,Vocational skills,Confidence,Innovation and Authorization;etc. This study developed the model of nurse manager competency which contains 6 dimensions. This model is divided into behavior normal,innovation,knowledge and skill,managerial expertise,personal characters and service orientation.2. The paper also tests and assesses the level and traits of nurse manager competencies. By using the questionnaire of nurse manager competency to assess the in-service nurse managers, the research result shows that their competency is comparatively satisfactory. The age and tenure of the nurse managers are the most significant factors to influence the competency level. The hospital type also shows stable variation and differentiation in competency. As the in-service tenure lasts, the competency is accordingly developed firstly, and then dropped. However, the educational background of the nurse managers shows no differentiation in competency.According to the survey results,several suggestions are proposed for prospective nurse manager selections,placement,performance appraisal, those who intend to be nurse managers in the primary and secondary schools, nurse manager competency standards and qualification,nurse manager education, nurse manager professional development, and the future research.
