Improving the research environment and creating better research conditions for scientific researchers is very important. All over the world, new measures are being taken to improve the science research environment. The military medical scientific research environment (MMSRE) has some exceptional strength, while facing some problems that need to be sorted out. Until now, there are only a few systematic research reports on the current MMSRE. The purposes of this project were to: investigate the current levels of satisfaction with regard to medical scientific research, study its impact factors and propose new countermeasures for improving the MMSRE.The survey contained two-rounds of questionnaires. The first questionnaire was mainly to investigate the satisfaction of the researcher within the current MMSRE. The second questionnaire was to study the importance of different factors for the MMSRE. After the investigation, all the data were input into a computer and analyzed using statistical software such as Graphpad Prism 5, origin 7.5 and EXCEL. The main statistical analysis used was the Spearman correlation analysis. The survey results revealed that:1. The current status of the MMSRE was not overly optimistic and about half of the total researchers were unsatisfied.Anonymous questionnaires from 188 researchers showed that only 45.7% (86/188) researchers were satisfied with the current research environment, meanwhile, 43.6%(82/188)researchers were unhappy, and 10.7% (20/188) of the total thought it was difficult to determine the answer. The analysis showed that the satisfaction of people from the primary, intermediate grade and deputy senior professional titles on the research environment was lower than the satisfaction of those with a senior title (P<0.05). Meanwhile, different age groups showed different level of satisfaction with the current scientific research environment. This revealed that people from ages 20 - 35 displayed more dissatisfaction with the status of scientific research environment than both the middle-aged and older researchers (P <0.05). Overall, the satisfaction survey suggests that the current MMSRE research environment was not viewed optimistically and needed to be improved. 2. Previously, the lack of research findings was low and this has improved, however the increase of funding should be consistent and the most important problem identified was the need to change methods for allocating research findings. The research funding is always a concern of researchers. Results showed that funding had improved: 46.8%(86/188) of the researchers thought that funding for the research was adequate, while 53.2%(100/188) of them thought it was insufficient and most researchers considered that it was still very difficult to obtain a grant from the government. Our further studies showed that the process for applying the grant and funding needs to be reformed, as many aspects are unfair.3. The cooperation between military research groups showed higher satisfaction, while further improvement was desired.Nearly 60% (115/188) of the researchers thought that the collaboration between different groups were easy, while nearly 25% thought it was difficult. The results showed that the cooperation and communication between different groups should be strengthened, although the cooperation from military research groups seemed to be better than the local research groups.4. Scientific research / professional title assessment was considered the most urgent problem that need to be solved. The survey found that about 61.7% (116/188) people selected scientific research and professional title assessment as the most urgent problem. Further analysis had been performed with regard to the results and different factors such as: gender, age, occupation and the title of the investigators. The demography of young people 73.0% (65/89), who choose that scientific research and professional title assessment should be solved, was higher than the average ratio 61.7%.In addition, about 1/3 population thought that the allocation and distribution of research funding mechanisms should be improved.5. The second round of the survey revealed that the current MMSRE had a "soft environment", rather than "hard environment," problem. The second round of the questionnaire contained eight main parts, which included 35 questions. Each of the questions contains four choices: very important, important, not important and unsure. More than 25% people chose"very important"on 30 questions, while over 60% chose"very important"or"important"on 31 questions. In summary, the results showed that the second round of the questionnaire had been widely accepted and supported by the investigators. Results also reflected the problem of the current research environment was a "soft environment" rather than "hard environment" problem.Based on two rounds of the survey, we found that the scientific research and professional title assessment system, as well as research funding allocation and distribution mechanisms, were not only the most concerned problems, but also the main source of disagreement with the current MMSRE. According to the results, we made six related strategies and countermeasures to improve current MMSRE.Conclusion: The present study on the MMSRE was of great importance. Results showed that the status of the current MMSRE was not optimistic, though there were definitely signs of improvement. Results also showed that scientific research / professional title assessment system and the system for applying for and allocating research funding are the most urgent problems that need to be solved. According to the results of two rounds of questionnaires, we made six related strategies and countermeasures to improve current MMSRE: i) To establish a sustainable strategic development mechanisms and continuously improve research infrastructure and technology platform construction; ii) To expand research funding sources, reform the scientific research funding allocation and distribution mechanisms; iii) To improve scientific assessment system, reform of the academic and scientific research and evaluation, with emphasis on research and performance evaluation; iv) To promote research morality, as well as supervision and management on academic corruption and mechanisms; v) To purify scientific research culture, and encourage scientific research personnel, especially young people to devote to the military medical research; vi) To explore an efficient interaction and feedback mechanisms to settle new problems and contradictions in the MMSRE.
