Objective:To explore the changes of medicaiton compliance, psychiatric symptoms and social function after treatment in rural schizophrenic patients cared by Home Management Mode (HMM). Methods:178 rural schizophrenic patients cared by HMM were enrolled, which came from Management and Treatment of Psychoses/686 project in Youxian site in Mianyang. All the subjects were assessed using self-made general information form, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Social Disability Screening Scale (SDSS) before and after 1-year free medication. Results:1. After 1-year free medication, the patients'compliance was improved. The patients numbers of medication adherence increased from 30 to 107 (χ2=54.949, p=0.000), the numbers of self-medication increased from 38 to 66(χ2=10.650, p=0.001), and the average number of psychiatric clinic visits increased from 3.13 to 6.79(t=10.776, p=0.000).2. The symptoms of patients relieved after the 1-year medication. The BPRS total score of patients reduced significantly from 44.49 to 26.92 (F=89.49, p=0.000), and the average relapse number reduced from 1.44 to 0.71(t=65.418, p=0.000).3. The patients social function was improved after the medication. The SDSS total score significantly reduced from 9.16 to 4.07 (F=21.52, p=0.000) and the degree of violent behaviors decreased. Conclusion: Rely on the current medical and health service network, the effective management and treatment to rural schizophrenic patients could dramatically improve their medication compliance, psychotic symptoms and social function.
