BackgroundThere're pros and cons in the various contemporary methods for reconstruction of the postoperative segmental (near) circumferential defect of hypopharynx carcinoma and cervical esophagus carcinoma, most of which, in a negative facet, bring about a heavy trauma and highly expense to the patient, and are time-consuming. Therefore, they are not suitable for the aged, the high-risky, and the poor. Hence it is essential to develop a new method in such regard.ObjectiveTo evaluate the laryngotracheal compound tissue flap in the reconstruction of the postoperative segmental (near) circumferential defect of hypopharynx carcinoma and cervical esophagus carcinoma for patients who fall in the category of the aged, the high-risky and the poor.MethodBy conducting a retrospective study of 8 cases with postoperative defect of the hypopharynx carcinoma and cervical esophagus carcinoma which was reconstructed using the laryngotracheal compound tissue flap.ResultNo deaths were caused in the preoperative period. No necrosis of the flaps was found after reconstruction. 7 cases had the one-stage-healing, 1 case healed with complication of small pharyngocutaneous fistula, and cured in 20 days by conservative treatment. 6 cases recovered the function of deglutition in 1 month after operation. 2 cases had anastomotic stricture, readapting to normal diets after the operation of anastomotic plasty in one and a half month.ConclusionThe application of laryngotracheal compound tissue flap in the reconstruction of the postoperative segmental (near) circumferential defect of hypopharynx carcinoma and cervical esophagus carcinoma significantly lightened the trauma to the patient, simplified the operation, shortened the operative period, and decreased the costs. The treatment was effectual. Overall, it enhanced the adaptability of the surgery. It is thus concluded to be applicable for patients of hypopharynx carcinoma and cervical esophagus carcinoma who are seniors, or who could be endangered by the operative high risks, inadequate in financial support, or in failure to preserve laryngeal function. Particularly, it is advisable to be adopted in base hospitals.
