Objective:Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease in the form of lymphocytic infiltration which infiltrate into the salivary gland and lacrimal gland, resulting in dry mouth and dry eyes. The etiology and the pathogenesis have not yet been fully understood. Presently, there is still few research on the relationship between Sjogren's syndrome and spleen-yin deficiency syndrome. This article will discuss the relations between Sjogren's syndrome and etiology, and further more, the cause of spleen-yin deficiency syndrome. Combining professors'experiences with the benefit of spleen-yin, clinical observations were conducted using Rehmannia Decoction Yam for treatments to patients with Sjogren's syndrome. Methods:Two topics will be discussed in the following research. First, retrieve and research on a large number of most up to date domestic and foreign literatures regarding the concept of drying syndrome in the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, disease and its clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatments. Secondly, a study of the discussion was conducted.40 patients with Sjogren's syndrome who met the inclusive criteria were randomly divided into the group of traditional Chinese medicine treatment group (Rehmannia Decoction Yam) and the group of hydroxychloroquine(WM)with 20 cases respectively. Patients in the Chinese medicine treatment group took Rehmannia Decoction Yam twice daily; once in the morning and once in the evening. Patients in Western medicine group were treated with hydroxychloroquine tablets in the dose of 0.2 bids. Both groups were observed for the duration of 2 months. The measurements of the outcome were clinical symptoms and signs, safety indicators, and efficacy observation. Results:The clinical study showed that Rehmannia Decoction Yam can effectively relieve patients'symptoms of dry mouth, dry eyes, dry skin, and dry nose, and improve the quality of life. This result is consistent with our observation in patients in the areas of tongue, lingual surface, coating on the tongue, and sublingual salivaConclusion:The clinical study confirmed the benefit of yin to spleen, supplemented by the law of nourishing blood can effectively relieve the dry eye and mouth symptoms for patients with Sjogren's syndrome. As it also showed that there was an improvement on the quality of patients' lives; thus the Chinese medicine treatment is more effective than Western medicine in this study.
