Objective To investigate serum adiponectin, carotid intima-medial thickness (IMT),plasma homocysteine and evaluate its mechanisms in patients with acute cerebral infarction. The results may provide us with new method for prevention and treatment of acute cerebral infarction. Methods This study included 50 newly diagnosed patients with acute cerebral infarction (cerebral infarction group) and 50 healthy persons (control group). Serum adiponectin, carotid IMT,plasma homocysteine, blood lipid and blood pressure in both groups were measured.Results1.In cerebral infarction group, serum adiponectin were significantly lower than that in control group (P<0.05),while carotid IMT,plasma homocysteine,TG and systolic pressure were significantly higher than in control group (P<0.05).2.Patients with bad prognosis had higher carotid IMT,plasma homocysteine,TG and systolic pressure and lower adiponectin compared with those with good prognosis (P<0.05).3.Serum adiponectin levels were negatively correlated with carotid IMT (r=-0.557),plasma homocysteine (r=-0.503),TG (r=-0.346) and systolic pressure (r=-0.299),while positively correlated with prognosis (r=0.511) in patients with acute cerebral infarction.Conclusion1. Serum adiponectin levels in patients with acute cerebral infarction were significantly reduced, while carotid IMT,plasma homocysteine,TG and systolic pressure were significantly increased.2. Serum adiponectin, carotid IMT,plasma homocysteine,TG and systolic pressure were related with prognosis of acute cerebral infarction.3. Serum adiponectin levels were negatively correlated with carotid IMT,plasma homocysteine,TG and systolic pressure, while positively correlated with prognosis in patients with acute cerebral infarction.4. Adiponectin may play a role in anti-atherosclerosis effects via reducing homocysteine, improving lipid dysfunction and lowering blood pressure.
