Purpose:The study was designed to investigate the status and origins of occupational stress and its effects on job satisfaction degree for medical staffs in military hospitals of Hunan province, central south China. Further possible solutions to the occupational stress situation of the population were explored. The study was carried out for enriching the knowledge to better the policies and principles thus for improve the job effectiveness and satisfaction degree in military hospitals.Methods:Medical staffs in three large-scale military hospitals in Hunan were involved and selected as subjects for a survey including 3 questionnaires, namely, general characteristics form, Life Event Scale (LES), Work Stress and Self-assessment Questionnaire, Psychological Stress Self-evaluation Test (PSET) and Job Satisfaction Self-assessement Questionnaire. We apply statistically rank sum test, t-test, one-way or multi-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and regression analysis which are conducted by SPSS 13.0.Results:1. This study investigated the three hospitals overall total of 300 people,215 effective questionnaires, the effective rate was 71.6%, of which 111 were males and 104 females.2. The main origins of occupational stress were events relating to work and training.3. For occupational stress which affects this special population most, we identified ten top causes of them:a) preparation for inspects and examinations by supervisors; b) entertaining and rest time taken up by working and learning; c) disorder of working shifts; d) too much work and learning induced pressure; e) conflicts between regular work and training; f) difficulty of promotion; g) change of occupation; h) large amount of debt obligation; i) lack of housing area; j) amativeness, engagement or marriage.4. The stress level of self-evaluation of military medical staffs in military hospitals shows that the stress level average score was 16.66 (SD=3.01), the overall satisfaction average score was 7.46 (SD=1.90), pressure range average score was 6.21 (SD=2.60).The mean value of general satisfaction degree was 7.46 (SD=1.90). The mean pressure range score was 6.21 (SD=2.60).5. The pressure of military medical staffs showed significantly positive correlation with stress level, working events, total life events and sociality events among which the job satisfaction degree showed significantly negative correlation with stress level, working events, negative life events and total life events.6. A stepped regression analysis indicated that stress and life events had predicting power to job satisfaction degree.Conclusion:The medical staff in military hospital in Hunan had a higher stress level of self-assessment, the overall satisfaction of medical staffs were more satisfied, the occupational stress had great influence in self-assessment. The staff who aging from 31 to 40, with senior captains, with intermediate technical title, had a highest stress level. And the people who had frequency of night job had lowest satisfaction degree. The main origins of occupational stress were events relating to work and training. Military Hospital medical staff can improve their job satisfaction by reducing the occupational stress and life events.
