Objective: To examine the effect of Schisandra chinensis Baill extract (SCE) on the regulation of lipids and the mechanisms involved. Methods: Sixty male Wistar rats, 180~220g, were randomly divided into six groups, 10 for each, i.e. normal control group (A); hyperlipidemia model group (B); high (60mg/kg), middle (20mg/kg) and low dose (5mg/kg) SCE treated groups (C, D and E); and the Shanzhajing (SZJ, 24.3mg/kg) treated group (F). Rats in each group were given water, SCE or Shanzhajing respectively for 21 days once daily. From the 8th day, all rats except for those in the normal control group, fatty emulsion was given orally for 14 days continually, once daily, to establish hyperlipidemic model. On the 21th day, after 16 hours of fasting, the blood samples were taken from carotid for the determination of the serum level of lipids, lipoprotein, and apolipoprotein (apo). Hemorheological parameters and mesentery microcirculation were also observed. Results: Compared with hyperlipidemia model group, the serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and Apo-B were significantly lower (P<0.05) in Group C and D ; High density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) in SCE and Shanzhajing treated groups was significantly increased, p<0.01). SCE also enlarged the inside diameter of small vessels, increased the number of capillary vessels, and reduced whole blood viscosity. Conclusion: By modulating the lipid metabolic disorder in hyperlipidemic rats, together with the elevation of HDL-C, decrease in whole blood viscosity, and improvement of microcirculation, SCE will exert its good effects in the prevention and treatment of arthrosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
