Purpose: To investigate the relationship between cystitis glandularis and anxiety or depression status in female patients with cystitis glandularis, and to explore the possible mental intervention approach, trying to provide evidences for combined therapy in treating cystitis. Methods: The Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) were employed to evaluate psychological response of 120 female outpatients with cystitis glandularis, then correlation factors were analyzed. 99 hospitalized female patients treated with transurethral electronresection in our hospital were followed up, and SAS and SDS were applied to evaluate the psychological response of those 18 patients who experienced surgical treatment for more than 9 months and shown with normal results of urinalysis and cystoscopy while consistently presented with clinical manifestations. Mental intervention was given and psychological response was evaluated by SAS and SDS after intervention. Results: The prevalence of anxiety and depression and the average scores in the 120 outpatients were higher than normal levels of Chinese population, and were correlated with education, income and the duration of the disease. Of the 99 hospitalized patients treated with transurethral electronresection, clinical symptoms of cystitis glandularis disappeared in 27, improved in 38 and unaltered in 34 patients after 9 to 38-month follow-up. 57 patients presented with negative results while 42 with positive findings examined by urinalysis and cystoscopy. Among those patients with negative findings, 32 patients showed sustained manifestations of cystitis glandularis and 25 patients returned to the clinic. 18 of those 25 patients who shown normal results of urinalysis and cystoscopy while consistently presented with clinical manifestations underwent mental survey and psychological intervention. A higher incidence of anxiety and depression was illustrated in those 18 patients, and the average scores of SAS and SDS were not only higher than the normal levels of Chinese population, but also higher than the levels of normal female patients with cystitis glandularis. After 6 weeks of combined therapy, the outcome was improved in 12 and invalidated in 5 patients. While follow-up was lost in 1 patient. The occurence of anxiety and depression and the scores were lower and the symptoms caused by anxiety and depression symptoms improved effectively. Conclusions: The outcome of transurethral electronresection for treating female cystitis glandularis is far from satisfactory. Female patients suffer form anxiety and depression may be one of the reasons for poor prognosis, Treat patients with psychotherapeutic intervention maybe of great help in achieving better outcome for female cystitis glandularis.
