Objective To investigate the clinical evaluation and side effects of levonorgestrel- releasing intrauterine system(LNG—IUS, Product name: Mirena) in the treatment of adenomyosis . Methods Follow the 38 cases of adenomyosis treated with levonorgestrel- releasing intrauterine system from December, 2008 to February, 2011.Observe the change of dysmenorrhea VAS score, menstrual volume, CA125 level,volume of uterus,thickness of uterus inner membrance and associated side effects before and after 1,3,6,12,18 months insertion respectively.Results After insertion of Mirena,all of the dysmenorrhea VAS scores,menstrual volume and thickness of uterus inner membrance decreased markedly.Comparing with before treatment, the differences all have the statistical significance.The CA125 level and volume of uterus reduced a little,while there were no statistical difference.The main side effects are little vaginal bleeding,Mirena-dropping-out, occurring functional ovarian cysts, amenorrhea, acnes,putting-on weigt and so on.Conclusion Mirena is an effective method in the treatment of adenomyosis.It is suit for the adenomyosis patients with the dysmenorrheal and/or heavy menstruation symptoms.
