Objectives To investigate the health status and health care requirements in elderlys, we assessed neurological health condition in the veterans of military communities in Fuzhou, investigated the incidence rate of cognitive impairment, dyskinesia, affective disorder and sleep disturbances, the risk factors and protective factors in the veterans of military communities, With the main objective realized, the investigation lays a solid foundation for further research and improvement in medical treatmnet and health care in elderly and provide evidence for better health care and medical services for elders. Methods By using stratified cluster sampling, a cross-sectional survey was conducted on 500 veterans of military from the 14 communities in Fuzhou. The cognitive functions were evaluated with clock-drawing task, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Activity of Daily Living Scale(ADL) and Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). The neurological function were evaluated with screening instrument scaling in Parkinson Disease;Emotional state were screened by the criteria of Center for Epidemiological Survey Depression Scale(CES-D).All of elderly were determined by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI) to measured the quality of sleep.Adopted EpiData 3.1 software to establish database and inputting data, analyzed the data with SPSS 13.0 software. Crosstables and ANOVA were used in univariate analyses whereas logistic regression was used in multivariate analyses.Rseults (1) The majority of elderly complicated with many underlying diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, they have to take medicine, so the proportion of taking medicine was very high. On further examination,we found about 14.8% elderly needs great care because of move with difficulty, underlying diseases, create huge economy burden to family and society.(2) The prevalence of neurological disease in the veterans of military communities in Fuzhou is 18.47%, among which the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment(MCI) and dementia was 11.25% and 7.22% respectively. We Study the Risk Factors of Cognitive Decline of Aged People in Fuzhou, there were significantly statistical differences in age, level of education, activities of daily living, addicted to drink and smoke. The detected rate of cognitive impairment showed tendency to ascend by ages.(3)The incidence rate of motor disturbance in the veterans of military communities in Fuzhou is 18.47%, among which the incidence rate of Parkinson Disease, essential tremor and other locomotor system diseases was 7.22%,9.13% and 2.12% respectively.(4)The average score of the Center for Epidemiological Survey Depression Scale(CES-D)among the surveyed 500 elderly in Fuzhou was 5.56±7.01 (full score 36), The prevalence proportion of depression was8.8%.(5) The mean score of PSQI in 500 elderly was 5.72±4.01,which 129(25.8%)elderly had poor sleeping quality, 192(38.4% common sleeping quality and 179(35.8%)good sleeping quality。Conclusions The health status of neurological diseases in the veterans of military conununities in Fuzhou could not be neglected. Compared with similar study in home and outsides, the prevalence of cognitive impairment and dyskinesia were comparatively high, but the disturbance of Emotion and sleep disorders were on the low side. Age , activity of daily living, addicted to drink and smoke were correlated with cognitive impairment, education degree was an independent protective factor with cognitive impairment. The disturbance of emotion was related to marital status, living conditions, smoking history , need caregivers and so on, thus relatively low in this kind of survey. Due to the superior economic conditions, living conditions and health care system in military conununities, the prevalence of sleep disorders was is on the low side. The heavy burden was quite common in family and society in veteran's community in Fuzhou, not only financial burden but psychology burden.
