ObjectivesAn observational study of Sequential therapy of TCM, which was based on the effective programs of veteran doctors of TCM, was designed to evaluate the clinical effects and impact on Immune parameters (CD4+,CD8+,CD4+/CD8+,IgE) of patients with bronchia asthma, and then, we can discuss the correlation of immune parameters and symptom score.MethodsPatients who were diagnosed with bronchial asthma and differentiated in cold attack of acute period or in mild or moderate degree were included from Jan 2010 to Jan 2011 in Outpatient Department of Respiratory Medicine of Guangdong provincial hospital of TCM. They were treated with Sequential therapy of TCM:Chinese medicine decoction for 3 months. Patients in acute period will be also treated with point injection for two courses. Before and after that, the immune indicators and the symptom scores were checked, their correlation and the clinical effects were also evaluated comprehensively.Result1.34 patients were included, Male 12, female 22 cases.28 patients were in acute period, while 6 patients in chronic duration.4 cases were off in the half-way, and 4 cases in a combination of western medicine Seretide. Ultimately 26 patients completed the treatment program, including 20 cases, who finished the review of immune parameters after treatment.2. The symptom scores of asthma decreased apparently after 3 months' treatment with Sequential therapy of TCM; (P<0.01) Patients had significantly fewer attacks, and asthma symptoms improved significantly after treatment than before.3. The scores of ACT increased apparently after 3 months'treatment with Sequential therapy of TCM (P<0.01); The quality of life of patients significantly improved compared with the previous; According to ACT scores we divided three level:uncontrolled, portion control, complete control. before treatment, the level distribution was uncontrolled 23 cases(67.6%), partial control 11 patients (32.4%). after 3 months of treatment, the distribution was:unontrolled 5 patients (14.7%), partial control 19 cases(55.9%), complete control 10 patients (29.4%).Quality in evaluating asthma control was improved markedly after 3 months'treatment(Z=-4.179, P<0.01);4.20 patients completed the review of immune parameters.before and after treatment, the mean level of CD4+,CD8+ were all in normal range. the mean level of IgE were both higher than the normal range at before and after treatment. Compared with before-treatment, the level of CD4+,CD4+/CD8+,IgE show no significance after the treatment(P>0.05), while the level of CD8+ decreased markedly after the treatment, but still in the normal range. (P<0.05)5. According to the level of immune indicators after treatment, we divided them into two groups, one is lower than before, the other is higher. Comparing with two group of each immune indicator, scores of ACT, symdrom scores of asthma before the treatment, and their difference before and after treatment, all show no significance. (P>0.05)ConelusionAfter three months'treatment to patients who in cold attack of acute period or in mild or moderate degree with Sequential therapy of TCM, which was based on sengeqinglong decotion that can Yi Qi Fu Zheng, Shu Feng Jie Biao and Bu shen tian jing, Promote recycling, the number of Acute attacks of patients significantly reduced, the symptoms of patients in chronic duration were further improved. All that show Sequential therapy of TCM can reduce attacks of patients in acute period, improve their symptoms in acute period and chronic duration, and markedly increase rates of asthma control, so as to improve the quality of life of patients. Sequential therapy of TCM to asthma patients showed no significant effects on immune parameters and showed no significant correlation between improvement of symptom scores and immune parameters. There may be two reasons, one was that sample size was too small, the other low on rate of abnormal indicators. While the impact on the T cell subsets and IgE depends on further clinical studies.
