Objective:To observe the differences of clinical efficacy in treating wind-cold induced common cold with needles retained for 15 minutes and 30 minutes under the same needling method. To provide reference for choosing a preferable period of needle retaining time in treating wind-cold induced common cold with acupuncture.Method:Based on the randomized and controlled clinical research method, a total of 60 patients were respectively divided into 15-minute group and 30-minute group. Each group had treatment once a day for 3 consecutive days. The diagnosis criteria is based on symptomatic diagnosis standards of common cold in guiding principles for clinical research on new Chinese material medicines by Chinese medicine and technology publishing house in 2002. The pretreated and post treated efficacy evaluation was made based on the symptom rating score sheet from the above principles and with a homemade symptom checklist.Result:Fifty-seven in sixty cases have finished the whole course of treatment, with one case falling off and two eliminated. And fifty-seven cases have completed follow-up the next day. After three consecutive days of treatment, the total effective rate and the cure rate of 30-minute group are 93.10% and 31.03% respectively and that of 15-minute group are 89.28% and 21.43% respectively. Self control of both groups before and after the treatment showed significant difference in both the chief symptoms and the minor symptoms scores (P<0.05). Comparison between the two groups showed no significant difference in their chief and minor symptoms improvement (P>0.05).Conclusion:In the treatment of wind-cold induced common cold, there is no significant therapeutic difference between 15-minute group and 30-minute group. However. taking the total effective rate and cure rate only into consideration, the 30 min group is more effective than 15min group. All of above provide a certain reference for clinicians choosing a more effective needle retaining time in acupuncture treatment.
