Interferon(IFN) is a broad-Spectrum antivirotic. Instead of directly killing or inhibiting virus, IFN inhibits the replication of HBV mainly by inducing the generation of antiviral proteins via the receptors on cell surface. IFN also have functions of immunoregulation and enhancing the antivirus ability by improving the activation of NK cells, macrophages and T lymph cells. As a member of cytokines, IFN is a multifunctional protein (mainly glycoprotein) generated by monocytes and lymph cells .For homogeneous cells, IFN has many bioactivities such as broad-spectrum antivirus, effecting cell growth, immunoregulation , etc. It is primarily used in curing chronic active hepatitis B adult patients with the virus replication mark of positive for HBV-DNA, DNA polymerase or HBe Ag ,and treating acute and chronic hepatitis C adult patients with the positive for HCV antibody and the increase of ALT.IFN can also be used to treating disease such as condyloma acuminata , herpes zoster, infantile viral pneumonia and upper respiratory tract infection, chronic cervicitis, hepatitis D, hairy cell leukemia, multiple myeloma, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas, chronic leukemia, Kaposi's sarcoma, kidney cancer, laryngeal papilloma, melanoma,granuloma fungoides,bladder cancer,basalioma,etc.In the recent years'work of antivirus and anticancer research, natural substance with the function of immunoregulation and antivirus are preferred to being under development. As a natural antivirus protein for human body , IFN has been paid much more attention. Obviously , it will be one of the most widely used antiviral and anticancer drugs. Compared with normal hepatitis B curing medicines of which the potency is up to 20%-30%, IFN is the first choice for treating chronic hepatitis B. IFN is the future direction for development of anti chronic hepatitis drugs. It is also the only effective drug for treating hepatitis C and the most widely used anticancer cytokine. It not only enhances the immunological functions, but can also modulate the body from autoimmune disorder to its normal level. Clinical applications suggest that treating with IFN generally not arouse serious side effect , so the expanded application of IFN into new indications is clinically underway.
