Objective:To investigate the relationship between the changes of brain water content and the edema formation following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH),and to evaluate the effect of Chinese traditional medicine method(Di Tan Tong Luo TCM method,DTTL TCM method)on cerebral edema on rats in 72h.Methods:Rat model of intracerebral hemorrhage was established by injecting self arterial blood into the caudate nucleus.Forty rats were randomly divided into control group, cerebral hemorrage group, standard mannitol treatment group and DTTL treated group. The rats in each group were killed at 72h. The experiment observed the water content in cerebra and the neurobehavior of rats.Neurological function was valued by Longa tests. The brain water content was determined by wet-dry weight.Result:The brain water content and Longa tests records were significantly increased after intracerebral hemorrhage (P<0.01),The brain water content and Longa tests records of standard mannitol treatment group and DTTL treated group were significantly decreased (P<0.05).Conclusions:DTTL TCM method has a significantly treatment effect on cerebral edema formation following cerebral hemorrhage and DTTL TCM method may play an important role in treatment of edema formation following cerebral hemorrhage.
