Pain is one of main causes for people to seek medical health care. Only if do nursing students have effective pain management knowledge and skills, can they serve better for patients in the future. Improving nursing students' pain knowledge has close relationships with the core knowledge of pain curriculum in basic nursing education. Nursing education of pain develops faster in Europe and America. The University of Toronto Centre in Canada has developed, enforced and evaluated an integrated interfaculty curriculum according to pain curriculum of the International Association for the Study of Pain(IASP). However, there is no an integrated core knowledge of pain curriculum in our country. So the aim of this study is to construct Chinese nursing students' core knowledge of pain curriculum and improve their abilities of pain management in the future.ObjectiveTo construct Chinese nursing students' core knowledge of pain curriculum and explore the learning demands of nursing students at different levels.MethodsThe study based on the pain curriculum of the University of Toronto Centre in Canada, combined with Chinese situation and on the basis the experts' advices and extensive literature review. A self-designed questionnaire was used to investigate 410 nursing students about pain curriculum knowledge demands, then drafted preliminary core knowledge system about pain.Based on the Preliminary Core Knowledge of Pain Curriculum, and according to the procedure and requirement of modules of enacting skills in basic nursing education, modeuled the core knowledge system of pain curriculum as follows:classified the same kind of items into one module, and every module contained all knowledge of the same content, each module correlated with each other and formed pain curriculum. Then modular knowledge system was carried out through two rounds Delphi experts' consulation. At last, the Core Knowledge of Pain Curriculum was established. In order to improve the the learning and operative efficiency, it is important to explore the learning demands of nursing students at different levels, as the basic of pain curriculum, for improving the learning efficiency. Rank sum test was used to analyse the contents.ResultsAt last, the Core Knowledge of Pain Curriculum was established, including:Pain Nursing Education Overview; Pain Assessment and Treatment; Acute Pain Challenges; Chronic Pain Challenges; Children and(or) Juvenile Pain, Case Analysis, there were 66 sub-knowledge items.32 items were very important and accepted by different levels nursing students.Compared with colleges students, undergraduates thought that the knowledge about chronic pain should be increased and the knowledge about Pain Nursing Education Overview should be decreased. In order to improve nursing students learning more effectively, curriculum system should be set up according to students at different levels.ConclusionThe study constructed the Core Knowledge of Pain Curriculum in Basic Nursing Education, and analyzed different level nursing students'learning requirements, provided theoretical and practical guidelines for pain curriculum.
