Objective To investigate new ideology and approach of treating latent hypertension according to the "salt overwhelming blood" theory in the Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic. Methods Experimental and theoretical researches were conducted. SD rats were divided into normal control group, high-salt model group, and high-salt with Dan Shen group. The rats in the high-salt and the high-salt with Dan Shen group received IG of 1 ml 12% NaCl solution per 100g, while the rats in the normal group received distilled water per 100g. IG was performed every morning for 30 days. Every afternoon of the last 7 days, the rats in high-salt with Dan Shen group received intraperitoneal injection of 2 ml complex solution (0.4ml/100g Dan Shen injection and instilled water), whereas the rest rats received intraperitoneal injection of 2 ml instilled water. The indexes of rat's appearance, performance, water and forage consumption volume, weight, and hemorheological change were observed. The rat tail blood pressure (RTBP, systolic blood pressure) was measured. Results At the early stage of experiment, the difference between the normal group and the high-salt group was significant in terms of RTBP (systolic blood pressure)(p<0.05). At the late stage, the rats in the high-salt group witnessed the increase of whole blood viscosity (shear rate:30.00 and 200.00; p<0.01), whole blood relative index at high shear stress (p<0.01), and whole blood reduced viscosity at high shear stress (p<0.05); Dan Shen was capable of improving the above indexes. The RTBP (systolic blood pressure) was decreased in the normal control group (p>0.05) but increased in the high-salt group (p<0.05); in Dan Shen group, it increased remarkably at the first half of the experiment (p<0.05) and decreased gradually to the pre-experimental level at the second half of the experiment (p>0.05).Conclusion High-salt diet can increase whole blood viscosity, whole blood relative index at high shear stress, whole blood reduced viscosity at high shear stress, and blood pressure of the experimental animal. Dan Shen can effectively improve the condition of hemorheology and hypertension. The factor of physical institution exerts an influence on the blood pressure of rats. The animal experimental model of high-salt diet and blood stagnation syndrome that established by 12%NaCL is successful. This research provides the experimental evidence and theoretical basis for preventing hypertension via combining low-salt diet with method of activating blood and removing blood stagnation, and launches a new ideology and approach for treating latent hypertension with TCM.
