Objective:To observe therapeutic effect of the modified formula Kexuefang on chronic cough caused by Eosinophilic bronchitis(EB) belong to liver-fire attacking lung type in TCM and study chinese traditional and western treatments and its action mechanism on EB.Methods:60 patients with EB belong to liver-fire attacking lung type in TCM were randomly divided into two groups:the treament group and the control group. The treamtent group took modified formula Kexuefang orally while the control group inhaled Pulmicort aerosol, one month as a course of treatment. Before and after the treatment, the symptom of cough, quality of life effected by cough and analysis of induced sputum cytology were recorded. Results:After treatment, the total effective rate about relieving cough of the treatment group and the control group was 93.3% and 86.7% respectively, with no statistical significance between them. (P> 0.05); There were 21 patients (70.0%) in the treatment group whose proportion of eosinophils in induced sputum converted to normal after treatment, while the control group, only 13 patients (43.3%), with statistical significance between them. The total effective rate about improving quality of life effected by cough of the treatment group and the control group were 93.3% and 73.3% respectively, with statistical significance between them. (P< 0.05). During the treatment period, no side effects were found in the treatment group, but in the control group two patients felt mild discomfort in throat. Conclusion:Both of the modified formula Kexuefang and Pulmicort aerosol can improve clinical symptoms of EB, but effects of the modified formula kexuefang on inhibiting inflammation of trachitis and increasing quality of life effected by cough were better than Pulmicort aerosol, in addition the modified formula kexuefang has less side effects than the Pulmicort aerosol.
