Correlation Between Serum Apelin Level And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus With Atherosclerosis

Objective:To investigate the relationship between serum apelin level and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) patients with atherosclerosis.Methods:Totally 100 subjects were enrolled as normal control group(30 cases),T2DM no atherosclerosis group(35 cases), T2DM with atherosclerosis group(35 cases). Body mass index(BMI),waist hip ratio(WHR),fasting plasma glucose(FPG), HbA1C, blood lipids, insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) were assayed in all the subjects. Later serum apelin level was detected by ELISA assay.Results:1. The level of apelin, BMI, WHR, FPG, HbA1C, TC, TQ FINS, LDL-C, HOMA-IR in T2DM and T2DM associated with carotid atherosclerosis group was significandy higher than that of normal control group (P<0.01); Compared with normal control group, serum apelin level was significantly higher in T2DM group (53.79±9.17)μg/L vs (44.44±9.20)μg/L (P<0.01); compared with T2DM group, serum apelin level in T2DM with carotid atherosclerosis was significantly higher (61.52±5.18) vs (53.79±9.17)μg/L(P<0.01).2. Partial correlation analysis showed that serum apelin level was positively correlated with ln(HOMA-IR), TC, FPG(r=0.486,0.491,0.400, P<0.01, P<0.01, P<0.05).3. Logistic regression analysis showed that apelin and HOMA-IR were the risk factors for T2DM with atherosclerosis.Conclusions:1. Compared with normal control group,serum apelin level in T2DM and T2DM with atherosclerosis patients was increased,suggesting that apelin level and type 2 diabetes are related.2. Partial correlation analysis showed that serum apelin level was positively correlated with ln(HOMA-IR), TC, FPG, suggesting that apelin was correlated with obesity, insulin resistance, and lipid metabolism disorder.3. Logistic regression analysis showed that apelin and HOMA-IR were the risk factors for T2DM with atherosclerosis. Apelin might be involved in insulin resistance syndrome and constitute the atherosclerotic pathological physiological basis.
