Objective:To investgate the apoptosis and the expression of caspase-8 and Bid in lichen planus,in order to explore their effects in the pathogenesis of lichen planus.Method:TUNEL was used to examine the apoptotic cells and the immunchistochemical technique was used to test the expression of caspase-8 and Bid in 30 cases lichen planus and 10 cases normal skin. Results:The expression of apoptotic cells were substantial in nuclears in the keratinocytes of lichen planus compared to apoptotic cells were significantly reduced in normal skin. The keratinocyte AI (apoptosis index) values of 72.82±9.23, was significantly higher than which in the normal control group of 28.16±3.46, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.01). The expression of caspase-8 and Bid was substantia In lichen planus keratinocytes, however there was only little expression of them in basal layer of normal skin. The integrated optical density(IOD) values of Caspase-8 and Bid were 11.87±2.15 and 10.85±2.05 in the lichen planus group compared with which were 7.30±0.32 and 7.18±0.30 in the normal control group, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.01), and the IOD values of the lichen planus group was significantly higher than which of the normal control group. Conclusion: In lichen planus, the apoptosis of keratinocytes were significantly Increased; The up-regulated expression of caspase-8 and Bid were found in lichen planus, indicating the possible involvement of these facts in the pathogenesis of the disease.
