Hongsuanqi, the root or the whole plant of maculata (D. Don) Machride (the family of Liliaceae), is a kind of Chinese traditional herb medicines in china, which is used to treat gastric hot thirsty, restlessness and ministry oedema. The research on its chemical constituents has rarely been reported. Furthermore, the classification of Tricyrtisi in Liliaceae is a big controversy among the plant system scientists. The plants of Tricyrtis mainly distribute in Taiwan province, southwestern and central China. The purpose of this research is to show the values of this plant and to give some references for the systematic classification. Based on the theories and principles of phytochemistry, the chemical constituents of Tricyrtis maculata (D. Don) Machride from Taibai Mountain was studied. This thesis introduced the distribution and biological characteristics of Tricyrtis, and summarized the development of studies on chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of Polygonateae with the most similar morphological and anatomical. The systematical test on chemical constituents in Tricyrtis maculata showed that the plant contained phenolic compounds, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, saccharides and glycosides, tannins, organic acids and volatile oils, without coumarins, cardiac glycosides, alkaloids or cyanogenic glycosides.Nine compounds were isolated and purified from the methanolic extract of Tricyrtis maculata (D. Don) Machride by silica gel, macroporous adsorption resins, Sephedex LH-20 column chromatography and recrystallization. Based on the analysis of their spectral data and the comparation with the related literatural data, seven compounds were identified as stigmast-4-en-3-one (HSQ-3), stigmasterol (HSQ-4), kaempferol (HSQ-5), 5,7,2′,6′- tetrahydroxyflavone, kaempferol-3-O- [α-L-rhamnopyra-nosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopy ranoside] (HSQ-6), quercetin andβ-sitostero (HSQ-7). These compounds were found for the fist time from this plant.
