[Background and purpose]Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional illness, characterized by abdominal pain and discomfort symptoms without pathologic and biochemical findings. It is often associated with visceral sensitivity and colon motility as well as the abnormal psychological conditions and so on. Handled in the gastroenterology clinic patients, IBS patients with about 30-50%, although it is not a fatal disease, but the quality of life in patients with a great impact, also generate high medical costs. The prevalence of IBS in Western countries is about 4.4-22%, the prevalence of Asian countries, mostly around 5%, prevalence of female is higher than male. At home and abroad over a large number of studies have concentrated on community-based analysis of the general population, but this special group of university teachers in the investigation, the relevant literature is rare. National research priorities for the university teachers are mostly quality of life and spirit of the psychological research,70% of university teachers are in sub-healthy state, of which 1/3 in the severe sub-health state. The relevant reports indicate that the poor quality of life for university teachers, and have more anxiety, depression and other negative psychological and emotional, rather rare in epidemiological investigations of IBS. Comparing with community residents in Hangzhou, we explored the prevalence, symptom characteristics, and related factors of IBS in university teachers of Hangzhou. In order to raise awareness of university teachers as well as the psychological mental or emotional symptoms and the high prevalence of gastrointestinal for targeted mental health education and preventive measures.[Methods]Taking the whole group, to pick up three of the six urban areas where a permanent resident of a community (residence for one year and above), the City College and HuaJiachi campus teachers of Zhejiang University were interviewed face-to-face by using a questionnaire survey which included basic information, gastrointestinal symptom questionnaire, life events scale, hospital anxiety and depression scale total of four parts. Diagnosis of IBS using ROME III criteria. All data are applied SPSS16.0 software package, P<0.05 for the difference has statistical significance.[Results]1. A total of 231 university teachers were investigated, the prevelance rate of IBS was 12.99%(30/231); community residents 749 people, the prevalence rate was 7.34% (55/749);_The prevalence rate of university teachers is higher than community residents, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01), stratified by sex, the prevalence rate of university male teachers is higher than the male community residents (P<0.05).2. In addition to constipation, the common gastrointestinal symptoms of IBS incidence of university teachers is higher than community residents, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).3. The prevalence of anxiety, depression, and at the same time suffering from anxiety and depression of university teachers were higher than community residents, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).4. The scores of anxiety and depression as well as the BEST of university teachers were higher than those of community residents, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).5. Univariate analysis showed that factors such as age, anxiety, depression, life events stress, occupation, past history of abdominal disease in the IBS group and non-IBS group differences (P<0.05); After multivariate regression analysis showed that the past history of abdominal disease may be risk factor for IBS.[Conclusions]The prevalence of IBS of university teachers in Hangzhou, as well as anxiety, depression and the incidence of gastrointestinal symptoms were higher than community residents, mental and psychological state deserve further attention, past history of abdominal disease is a possible risk factor for IBS.
