Deng Zhan Hau Injection For Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review

Objective To assess whether dengzhanhua injection are effective and safe at improving outcomes in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).Methods We searched the CENTRAL,MEDLINE,EMBASE,CNKI,CBM,VIP up to October 2009. Randomized controlled trials(RCTs) about using dengzhanhua injection to treat DPN were included. We also searched the reference lists of relevant articles. Two reviewers independently extracted the data from the eligible studies and evaluated the quality of the included studies. Meta-analysis was performed for the results of included studies using RevMan 5.0.Results We included eighteen trials, all carried out in China, involving 1453 participants. The quality of the most included studies were of low level and small sample."Funnel plot"showed symmetry, which indicated less possible publication bias and the results were partly reliable. Meta-analysis indicated:â‘ Dengzhanhua injection showed significantly effects on the improvement of the signs and symptoms [OR=5.77, 95%CI(3.90,8.54), P<0.00001] ;â‘¡The improvement of some nerves conduction velocities (median sensory nerve, median motor nerve, common peroneal sensory nerve and common peronealmotor nerve ) of DPN by dengzhanhua injection. [WMD=4.76, 95%CI(3.53,6.00),P<0.00001;WMD= 7.31,95%CI(4.41,10.20) P<0.00001;WMD=3.15, 95%CI(0.86,5.44), P=0.007; WMD=6.36, 95%CI (4.69,8.04), P<0.00001];Compare with vitamin B, dengzhanhua injection showed significantly positive effects on the improvement of the symptoms and signs. [OR=7.24,95%C(I4.36,12.02),P<0.00001];The increase of some nerves conduction velocities(median nerve and common peroneal nerve) by dengzhanhua injection was better than the vitamin B.[WMD=6.73, 95%CI(5.36,8.09),P<0.00001; WMD=5.25, 95%CI(3.85,6.65), P<0.00001]. Only few patients in dengzhanhua injection group show local reaction (dizziness,local erythema) and the adverse effects disappeared after stopping drugs. No serious adverse effects were reported.Conclusion This Meta analysis implied that dengzhanhua injection appears to be a safe and effective treatment on diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
