Objective To understand health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and clinical nursing in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), to identify the relationship between the physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component summary scores in SLE patients, and to measure the effects of clinical nursing on health-related quality of life in SLE patients .Methods 384 SLE patients were recruited from Anhui Provincial Hospital and the first affiliated hospital of Anhui Medical University between May 2008 and May 2009. 186 of them were inpatients who had received clinical care form the residents and nurses, the other 198 patients were outpatients.Real-name system, the patient self-administered questionaire and face to face investigation were used to collect the general situation of SLE patients. Disease activity and damage were assessed using the SLE Disease Activity Index(SLEDAI)and Systemic Lupus Internaional Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index(SDI). Quality of life assessment HRQOL was assessed using SF-36 questionnaire. All data were analyzed using SPSS 10.01. probability value less than 0.05 in two-tailed test was considered significant. Results Results show that the PCS and MCS scores of MOS SF-36 were lower in outpatients compared with inpatients. There was a positive correlation between PCS and MCS. PCS and MCS may be both affectd by age (p<0.05), clinical nursing (p<0.05), SLEDAI (p<0.05) and SDI (p<0.05).Conclusion This data suggested that patients with SLE have significant impairment of their HRQOL. PCS were positively associated with MCS. HRQOL may be affected by clinical nursing, age, SDI,and SLEDAI. Clinical nursing could significantly improve HRQOL in SLE patients by combining effect of physical health and mental health.
