Objective:To evaluate complement activation in patients with periodontitis and to examine the relationship between the degree of complement activation and bacterial aggression in periodontitis infection. Methods:The subjects were divided into 3 groups:18 periodontitis patients and 23 gingivitis and 16 healthy persons (group control). ic3b (derived from the cleavage of the serum protein complement 3) were evaluated. Normal human serum incubation with Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g), Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (A.a), Streptococcus sanguis (S.s),then measured ic3b by enzyme immunoassay. Results:Serum ic3b levels were significantly higher in patients with chronic periodontitis than healthy persons (p<0.05). There were no significant differences of serum ic3b between gingivitis and healthy persons(p>0.05). Porphyromonas gingivalis, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Streptococcus sanguis et al can activation complement ic3b.Conclusion:Periodontal disease affects the body levels of serum complement changes. Periodontal pathogens can activate serum complement.
