Back pain limits activity and is the second most frequent reason for physician visits. The conventional approach to treatment of back pain due to disc protrusion is often limited. Acupuncture has been used as a prophylactic and therapeutic medical tool in China for thousands of years, and is now proving valuable in modern medical practice as an effective therapy for musculoskeletal problems, including back pain.Objective: The paper focuses on clinical practice in mastering the performance of acupuncture treatment, especially for back pain due to disc protrusion and to complete the integrative medicine.Methods: The acupuncture treatment used to treat the 2 cases of back pain due to disc protrusion, based on the good techniques and skill of acupuncture as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to completeness the comprehensive treatment. All of 2 cases had significant sciatic pain, and 1 of the 2 presented with a numbness complaint at the toe and ventral side of the right foot. Lesions were well demonstrated on CT Scan or MRI examination and were proved to be disc protrusion. Instruments: The stainless steel of disposable filiform needles (Hwatou?) with length 50 mm and diameter 0.30 mm; The Acupuncture Electronic Treatment Instrument (Hwato? SDZ-II); The Special Electromagnetic Wave Therapeutic Apparatus (TDP). Acupoints selected: Shenshu (BL 23), Weizhong (BL 40), Yaoyangguan (DU 3), Ashi Points, Huantiao (GB 30), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Chengshan (BL 57), Kunlun (BL 60), Yaoyan (EX-B 7), Ciliao (BL32), Dachangshu (BL 25) and Jiaji (EX-B 2). Needling Performance: Disinfection the hands of the Acupuncturist and the area of the patient selected for needling; The patient in prone position and than do needling to the selection of acupoints; Selecting and needling the acupoints based on patient complain and condition; After the needles are inserted and obtained needling sensation (the arrival of Qi, or Deqi in Chinese), the basic manipulations used to stimulate the acupoint (twirling and rotating, and lifting and thrusting); The Qi sensation (Deqi) of Huantiao (GB 30) acupoint should spread downward along the corresponding meridian; Following needle insertion and needling sensation, the reinforcing method (Bufa) is used by briefly and gently; Use The Acupuncture Electronic Treatment Instrument (Hwato SDZ-II) with appropriate waveform (use the continue wave) and frequency, adjust the output current from low to high until the comfort level of the patient is reached; The Special Electromagnetic Wave Therapeutic Apparatus (TDP) used for the lumbar area in the retaining needles time; Retain the needles in 30 minutes for every treatment, Than, withdrawal the needles after the treatment time finish.Results: After the patients received some acupuncture treatments, there were no adverse effects related to the treatment. Follow-up evaluations found that patients maintained a satisfactory pain control, but exercise for strengthen the back appear necessary to maintain this capacity over time.Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment is very effective, can be a good choice to complete the combination treatment for back pain due to disc protrusion because it can be easily accepted for the patients, low cost, and shows no side effect and convenient for long time treatment. This is an area where Integrative Medicine can play a large and productive role, between Conventional (Western) Medicine and Acupuncture - Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
