Object Through monitoring the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and basic fibroblast growth factor(b-FGF)of WHO grade I〔《WHO(Year 2000) Classification》〕meningioma samples,we investigate the action of VEGF and b-FGF in the invasive behavior of meningiomas to offer theoretical and experimental evidence for clinical surgery,anti-angiogenic treatment, prognosis and relapse prevention of WHO grade I meningiomas. Methods The expressions of VEGF and b-FGF was determined by immunohistochemical technique in 50 WHO grade I meningiomas and 10 normal meningeals. We analyzed the relations between the expression levels of VEGF,b-FGF and the meningioma biological behaviors. The correlation between the expression levels of VEGF and b-FGF was also analyzed in this study. Results Expression of VEGF and b-FGF was negative in 10 samples of normal meningeal.Of 50 cases of WHO grade I meningioma,18 invaded the cerebral tissues adjacent to the tumors and 32 did not.In 18 cases of invasive meningiomas, there was strongly positive expression of VEGF in 13 cases, positive in 4,negative in 1 and the expression of b-FGF was positive in 14 and negative in 4.In 32 cases of noninvasive meningioma, there was strongly positive expression of VEGF in 2 cases, positive in 19 and negative in 11 and the expression of b-FGF was positive in 23 and negative in 9.There were significant differences in the positive and strongly positive rates of VEGF expression between the invasive and noninvasive meningiomas (P<0.05).There was strongest expression of VEGF in the meningioma regions with the most evident invasion of the cerebral tissues. There was no statistical significance in the positive rates of b-FGF expression between the invasive and noninvasive meningiomas(P>0.05).There was significantly positive correlation between the expression of VEGF and b-FGF in WHO grade I invasive meningiomas,WHO grade I noninvasive meningiomas and all 50 cases of WHO grade I meningioma(Spearman rank correlation coefficient are r_s=0.830,0.769,0.856,P<0.01)Conclusions1.There was a close correlation between the expression of VEGF and the invasive behavior of WHO grade I meningiomas. It is suggested that the expression of VEGF may play an important role in the invasive behavior of WHO grade I meningiomas. The expression of VEGF can index the invasion of meningiomas and the prognosis of patient.2.There was no significance correlation between the expression of b-FGF and the invasive behavior of WHO grade I meningiomas. And it is suggested the expression of b-FGF plays a not so important role in the invasive behavior of WHO grade I meningiomas. 3.There was significantly positive correlation between the expression of VEGF and b-FGF in WHO grade I invasive meningiomas,WHO grade I noninvasive meningiomas and all 50 cases of WHO grade I meningioma. This suggested that there may be a mutual synergy between VEGF and b-FGF in occurrence and development of WHO grade I meningiomas. The study indicated the correlation between VEGF,b-FGF and invasion of WHO grade I meningiomas, and the expressions of VEGF and b-FGF had important significance in evaluation of the invasive behavior of WHO grade I meningiomas.Furthermore, this study offers theoretical and experimental evidence for clinical surgery, anti-angiogenic treatment, prognosis and relapse prevention of WHO grade I meningiomas.
