Objective: to identify the prognosis factors for children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit(PICU).Methods: Retrospective study of 329 consecutive patients admitted to the university teaching hospital pediatric intensive care unit from June 2007 to June 2008, blood samples were obtained on admission to the intensive care unit and 24h following admission.Logistic analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with prognosis. Results: Univariate analysis identified 11 risk factors. On multivariate analysis, length of PICU stay, pediatric critical illness score (PCIS),serum calcium concentration, hydrogenion concentration, invasive procedures, length of mechanical ventilation were independent risk factors for prognosis. Conclusion: Prevention of risk factors may play a key role in decreasing mortality for children in intensive care unit.
