Objective To collect the information and explore the related influence factors about substance (psychoactive substance) use among students in Guangzhou, to provide basic data on health education in adolescents, to provide basic material for the sduty on risk behavior in Guangzhou, and to provide basis for the intervention measures.Methods In this study, a cross section study survey was carried out to adolescents in school in Guangzhou. A self-administered and anonymous questionnaire survey, using Youth Health Risk Behaviour Survey Questionnaire(Guangzhou), was conducted among 5519 students from 10 universities, 10 middle schools and 10 high schools in Guangzhou. The prevalence of substance use in adolescents in school in Guangzhou was presented.χ2 test and Logistic regression were used to explore the related influence factors about substance use among students in Guangzhou, and Pearson contingency coefficient was used to describe the relationship among all kinds of psychoactive substances.Results Among 5519 students, 331(6.0%) students reported current cigarette use, 1257(22.8%) students had had at least one drink of alcohol on >1 of the 30 days preceding the survey, 260(4.8%) students had sedative-hypnotic use experience, 229(4.2%) students had compound cough syrup using experience, and the percentage of the students who reported illegal drug use was 1.4%. Male had higher prevalence of substance use than female except for sedative-hypnotic use and compound cough syrup use.Universtity students had higher prevalence of lifetime cigarette use, lifetime alcohol use and current alcohol use, than middle school and high school students. However, high school students had the highest prevalence of current cigarette use, injured after drinking, and illegal drug use.(1) Parental attitudes, parents substance use and the style of family education were in connection with adolescents substance use. Students, whose parent were opposed to substance use or did not have related subastance use, had lower prevalence of substance. And a significantly positive correlation was found between physical punishment and adolescent substance use. (2) Negative correlations were found between good school result, definite goal and adolescent substance use. The students, who were always absent in class, had higher prevalence of current cigarette use, current alcohol use, sedative-hypnotic use and compound cough syrup use. (3) Some characteristics was found to have positive correlation with adolescent substance use, such as loneliness, useless and alone.Conclutions (1) The prevalence of substance use in Guangzhou was lower than the prevalence of national adolescent substance use, but it was higher than the prevalence of substance use in 2003. The condition of substance use was Severe, especially the drug to cough. (2) Different measures shoud be implemented to different students, high school students or students who were always absent in class should be the top priority. (3) Positive correlations were found among all kinds of psychoactive substance, It is necessary to implement comprehensive measures to prevent and control cigarette use, alcohol use and illegal drug use.
