Cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking are important risk factors for cerebrovascular diseases, cardiac diseases, hypertension and many other diseases. The relationship between cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and dementia have been paid close attention. China is a country with a large production and consumption of cigarettes and alcohol. It is of great significance to study the relationship between cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and dementia for the prevention of dementia. The study was to explore the relationship between cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and dementia in two aspects including the first part involving a 2-year prospective study on relationship between cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and risk of dementia and the second part studying the effect and mechanism of cigarette smoking on cognitive function in rats with Alzheimer,s disease(AD).Part One A prospective study of the relationship between cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and risk of dementiaObjectives The report focuses on investigating the relationship between cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and dementia in elderly people in a prospective study.Methods A 2-year follow-up study was conducted in 2820 elderly people aged 60 years old and over from six communities of Chongqing. All participants were screened with the MMSE and screen-positives underwent further neuropsychological testing, including ADL, FOM, RVR, POD,HDRS and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (DS and BD subtest). The diagnosis was made on the basis of DSM-III-R (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Smoking status was classified as never smokers, past smokers and current smokers. Smokers were grouped into light smoker, medium smoker, heavy smoker and very heavy smoker. Drinking types were classified as grape wine, beer and spirits.
