Abstract/Summary:
Objective:To explore the effect of the idiopathic epileptic seizures on the cognition function and the factors that affect it.Methods:The 70 patients diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy were investigated and assessed at the out-patient epilepsy clinic of First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University From January ,2008 to February,2009.40 healthy volunteers matched in sex,age and education levels were used as controls, which came from family member of patients, medical staff and heathy people in the hospital. All patients were examined by age of seizure onset, family history, handedness, duration, type of the epileptic seizures, frequen- cy, persistence time of every time, antiepileptic drug, blood drug level, electroencephalogram, CT and MRI. 70 epilepsy patients and 40 healthy controls were assessed with Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale for Chinese Revised(WAIS–RC).Theχ2 test with continuity correction was used for categoric data。Two groups on IQ outcome were analyzed by two inde- pendent-samples T test. The relation between cognitive change and the independent variables was assessed by using Pearson's correlation test and multiple linear stepwise regression analyses for continuous data.Results:1. Epileptic patients had lower FIQ,VIQ and PIQ than the healthy control group, with significant difference(P<0.05).all the 11 subtests scales of epilepsy group were significantly lower than those of the controls . A significant difference of the 11 subtests scales was observed among the two groups(P<0.05). 2.Pearson's correlation test and multiple linear stepwise regression analy- ses indicated FIQ had correlation with education levels, duration of seizure disorders , persistence time of every time and the account of antiepileptic drugs in the epileptic group(P<0.05). VIQ had correlation with education levels and the account of antiepileptic drugs(P<0.05).PIQ had correlation with persistence time of every time, education levels, the account of antiepile- ptic drugs and age(P<0.05).Conclusion:1.Cognitive dysfunction in idiopathic epilepsy patients is widespread.2.The duration of epilepsy, persistence time of every time, education levels, the account of antiepileptic drugs and age are factors of impaired cognition for idiopathic epilepsy patients.
