Objective: To observe the preventive and therapeutic effect of the Chinese traditional medicine fructus forsythiea on nausea and vomiting induced by emetogenic stimuli. Methods: Using rat pica models induced by cisplatin, copper sulfate, apomorphine and motion sickness to observe the antiemetic effect of fructus forsythiea. Rats'ingestion of kaolin was used as an index of nausea and vomiting. Results: Rat pica models induced by different antiemetics and motion stimulis were successfully established. Pretreatment with the aqueous and ethanol extraction of fructus forsythiea significantly inhibited pica in rats, and the aqueous-extraction demonstrated a better curative effect, especially the low-dose. Conclusions: Fructus forsythiea can significantly prevent and treat nausea and vomiting. Further investigations are required to make the effect and mechanism more specific.
