| ObjectiveTo develop a Chinese version scale of cultural competence for nurses with good reliability and validity,in order to provide an objective evidence for assessing the cultural competence of nurses.The scale was applied to investigate the level of cultural competence of nurses in China.Through the evaluation,the weakness of cultural competence of nurses could be found,and the stratigies to promote the cultural competence were highlighted.MethodsThe theory construction was put forward on the basis of the knowledge of practice and theory of cultural competence.the original inventory was established by reviewing literature and consulting experts.The inventory was evaluated by a panel of 5 experts to test the face validity and content validity.30 nurses in the 1st affiliated hospital of China Medical University were selected to answer the questionnaire for the pilot test in order to test the reliability.Then the questionnaire were distributed to 360 nurses of six hospitals in Peking,Shanghai,Guangzhou,Xi'an,Shenyang and Wuhan which were selected by convenience sampling and stratified sampling.All quantitative data of questionnaire survey was analyzed by SPSS13.0.After analyzing the items in the scale which was based on comprehensive consideration with discrimination,disperse trend, correlation analysis and factor analysis,the reliability and validity of the scale was tested.Descriptive analysis of the data was presented in average and standard deviation form.Analysis of variance was used to test the difference between the different groups. Multiple regression was used to test the variables that associated with the cultural competence. Results1,Item analysisBy comprehensive items analysis,5 items were deleted,55 items were retained.2,Reliability and validity of the scale(1)Reliability of the scaleâ‘ Cronbach's Alpha coefficient:Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of the overall scale was0.955,while the 3 dimensions were 0.880-0.925.â‘¡Split-scale reliability coefficient:the split-scale reliability coefficient of the whole scale was 0.832,while the 3 dimensions were 0.815-0.840.(2)Validity of the scaleâ‘ Content Validity:The original inventory contained 55 items,which were classified into 3 dimensionsand 7 sub-dimensions according to similar qualities. Accrording to the consultation of experts,14 items were modified,8 items were deleted,1 item was added,2 items were conflated.The content validity rate(CVR) of 49 items among the total are 1,the result indicated that 81.67%of the scale could respond the content of the measurement.The average of index validity rate(CVI) was 0.912.â‘¡Construct Validity:The correlation analysis indicated that the structure of the scale was excellent.The result of factor analysis was also good.With the method of principle components,3 factors were extracted on the standard that eigenvalues is over 1 and the cumulative variance was 41.953%.Loading for each factor was over 0.4.The result indicated that the structure of the scale was similar to the theory construction. The scale also had separating capability.3,The conditions of nursing cultural competenceThe majority scores of cultural awareness,cultural skill and cultural competence were higher than 70,the scores of cultural knowledge ranges from 60 to79.4,The affected factors of cultural competenceThere existed the differences between the different groups which are the years of nursing experience,the behaviour of contacting with different culture and the multicultural nursing education.The behaviour of contacting with different culture and the years of nursing experiene were affected factors of cultural competence.ConclusionsThe scale in this study showed excellent reliability and validity and was an appropriate measure instrument that can be used to assessing the cultural competence of nurses.The conditions of nursing cultural competence are general.Therefore we need broaden the channels for nurses to enhance their cultural sensitivity and develop the multicultural nursing education.
