Objective To assess the complications and effectiveness of nephron sparing surgery(NSS ) for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma. Methods Retrospective analysis of the clinical documents of 42 patients, who underwent nephron sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma at our institutions from 2005Oct.to 2007Apr..Of the 42 patients,30 are male and 12 are female with an average age of 49.5 years(range 27-85years).The mean diameter of the tumors is 2.77(range 1.5cm to 5cm) and the stage of all patients is T1N0M0.The evaluated factors include postoperative complications and incidence of postoperative local recurrence metastasis.Meanwhile, nephron sparing surgery compared radical nephrectomy with operation duration, measurement of hemorrhagic volume, extubation drainage time and hospitalization duration after surgery. Results The NSS for all 42 patients of renal cell carcinoma were successful. The postoperative complications included fluidify with infection in 1 case and wound infection in 2 cases. There were no other postoperative complications such as urinary fistula and renal failure observed, and no local recurrence and metastasis. There is no significant difference in operation duration, measurement of hemorrhagic volume, extubation drainage time and hospitalization duration after surgery between nephron sparing surgery and radical nephrectomy. Conclusions Nephron sparing surgery is safe and effective for the treatment of small localized renal cell carcinoma.
