The thesis studies on the constituents of Xylosma japonicum (Walp.) A Gray which grows in Qichun Town, Huanggang City, Hubei Province. Xylosma japonicum, evergreen shrub or small tree, is a herbaceous plant of Xylosma genus in Flacourtiaceae family, widely distributed throught the southern parts of Qinling Mountains and The Yangtze River. Its leaves are used as medicine and it, cold- natured, has a bitter, astringent taste; it has the effectiveness of clearing away heat evil and promoting diuresis, eliminating stasis to activate blood circulation and haemostasis, detumescence and odynolysis. Its leaves are also used as medicine and it, dry-natured, has a bitter taste; it has oxytocic effectiveness. The herb is used alone or mixed by other herbs in the folk medical history and it is made to cure detumescence and odynolysis, bone fracture, luxation, bleeding wound, birth difficulty and retention of dead fetus, and so on.We studied on the constituents of the branch and leaf of Xylosma japonicum for the first time. In our investigation, 15 compounds were isolated from the 95% ethanol extract of the herb of Xylosma japonicum. The structure of 12 compounds were estabilished on the basis of their physical and chemical properties and the spectral technology such as IR,MS,1H-NMR,13C-NMR and 2D-NMR. They are as follows: benzoic acid(S1), o-hydroxybenzoic acid(S2),n-octane(S3), n-Heptadecane(S4), 4′-hydroxy-3′-hydroxymethylphenyl-6-o-benzoyl-β-D-glucopyranoside(S5), fumaric acid(S6), monoethyl Fumarate(S7), octadecanoic acid(S8), hexadecanoic acid(S9), 4-hydroxy-2, 6-dibenzoate-1-[4'- hydroxy-2'- [[[[(1''''R, 2''''R, 6''''R)-1''''-hydroxy- 2''''-ethoxyl-3''''- carbonyl-6''''-acetasate-4''''-cyclohexen]carbonyl]oxy]methylene] phenyl]-β-D-Glucopyranoside(S10), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(S11), (1S, 3R, 4R, 5R)- 3-[[3'-(3'', 4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1'-oxo-2'-propenyl]oxy]-1, 4, 5-trihydroxy- Cyclohexanecarboxylic acid(S12) respectively. Of these compounds, S10~S12 were isolated from the Xylosma genus for the first time. The structures of the compounds from the branches and leaves of Xylosma japonicum see Fig. A.
