Objective: To explore a scientific, convenient and practical method of dental age estimation. Methods: To formulate a new class of the molar on radiography based on the previous results. In this retrospective study, orthopantomograms of 501 Chinese Han people of known chronological age and gender were selected; 168 were males and 333 were females and their ages ranged from 11 to 20 years. A number of works were done, which included reading, record, transcribe and et al. SPSS15.0 for windows was used to analyze the distribution of each tooth stage in different age groups. The standard atlas and mathematical models for age estimation were worked out at last. Results: 1. There were different errors in both gender group when dental age were determined based on the standard atlas. While the error in 1 year was found in 15years boy and 11~12 years and 17~20 years girl, the error in 2-year occurred in 11~14 years and 16~20 years boy and 13~16 years girl. Afte tested by the samples, t-test between the determined dental age and chrological age was done. We found that there was no notable difference between them. But the precision is wished to be improved in the future. 2. The multiple regression equations were constructed to estimate dental age. The accuracy of dental age estimation by the mathematic models in±1 year and±1.5 years were 74.66% and 89.37% respectively. Conclusions: 1. The teenagers in Shanghai (China) are matched to use the standard atlas. But it was wished to be checked and perfected because of its great errors. 2. The mathematic models could be used to determine the dental age with the standard atlas to diminish the errors.
