[Objective]Periodontitis destroys periodontal tissue mainly in the way of excessive host response, and some of inflammatory factors are elevated in this process. Those inflammatory media, especially inflammatory factors play an important role in the process of host response, they can not only destroy periodontal tissue, but can also have an impact on the process of host immune response, which can furtherly increase the susceptibility of systemic diseases. The purpose of this study was aimed to determine the levels of inflammatory factors in serum and gingival crevicular fluid(GCF) in patients with periodontitis, and investigate the relationship between the levels of inflammatory factors and the severity of periodontitis.[Methods]A total of 164 subjects without systemic diseases was included, they were categorized into four groups according to the clinical attachment loss:controls(37 subjects),slight pefiodontits(46 subjects),moderate periodontitis(39 subjects) and severe periodontitis(42 subjects). The items of age, gender, height, weight, smoking, family cardiovascular disease history, blood pressure of each subject were recorded. Gingival crevicular fluid and fast blood were collected from each subject, the platelet activating factor(PAF),interleukin-6(IL-6) levels in GCF and glucose, lipid,high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hsCRP),WBC,PAF,IL-6 levels in serum were tested.Data was analyzed by SPSS 16.0.[Result]There were no significant differences in age, gender, smoking, family cardiovascular disease history, serum lipids and glucose. The levels of inflammatory factors in serum:hsCRP,WBC,PAF,IL-6 were higher than those of controls(P<0.05). There were no significant differences of the quantity of GCF in the four groups, the PAF level in GCF of periodontitis was higher than that of controls(P<0.05),the GCF IL-6 level of slight periodontitis was higher than that of controls(P<0.05).The levels of inflammatory factor, neither PAF nor IL-6 in the GCF,had a significant relationship with that of serum.Periodontal depth, clinical attachment loss, and bleeding on probing had a significant relationship with the inflammatory factors in serum and GCF,the correlation coefficient was in the range of 0.189 and 0.424.[Conclusion]Simple periodontitis without systemic diseases has a relationship between the elevated inflammatory factors in GCF and serum, however, the levels of PAF and IL-6 in GCF were much higher than that of serum. There is a slight correlation between periodontal depth, clinical attachment loss, and bleeding on probing have with the elevated factors in GCF and serum.
