Objective:The purpose of this study was to explore the availability and safety by clamping drains intermittently after total knee arthroplasty for reducing blood draining.Methods:42 patients with primary total knee arthroplasty were randomized into experimental group and control group. The drainage tube in experimental group were clamped and released for 15 min every 2 h for 6 h.The control group were nonclamped. The volume of drainage of 4h,12h and24h postoperation were compared between groups. Results:The volume of drainage of 4h,12h and 24h postoperation in experimental group were significantly lower than that of in control group(P<0.05).Blood transfusion requirements postoperative in experimental group was less than that of control group thouth the diference was no statistical. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups with regard to rehabilitation time and postoperative complications such as haematoma and wound infections. Conclusions:Clamping drains intermittently after total knee arthroplasty is help to reduce blood loss without causing the delay of the wound healing and rehabilitation.
