Background:Migraine headache is characterized by recurring, throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head, often along with nausea, phobia of light and noise, and visual delusion. The etiology is not yet fully understood, but is believed to be related to hereditary, diet, stress and hormonal imbalance.Migraine is a common condition.According to the Survey of Epidemiology, the prevalence in China is 985.2 per hundred thousand persons, which is lower than that of the America and Europe.About 20%of the British population is diagnosed with migraine headache,of which 60%-70%are female. Due to its high prevalence and unbearable symptoms, the patients' daily activities are often greatly affected;therefore, neurological research on the subject is significantly needed.Temple Three-Needles are one of the commonly used Jin' s Three Needles. It is located on the side of the head where the reflecting region of the cortex of the temporal lobe is situated. Moreover, the temple three needles run along the area of Shaoyang Meridian, thus directly relieve the local symptoms by unclogging the blocked channels. Its effect is much more prominent than choosing acupoints far along the meridian.Purpose:To investigate the therapeutic effect of using the temple three-needles in the treatment of migraine headaches. Method:A total of 60 qualified patients were randomly divided into treatment(temple three-needles) and control(traditional acupoints) groups. As per the National Diagnostic Standards for Chinese Medicine, our study was designed to observe the efficacy of applying the temple three-needles in the treatment of migraine headaches, using the traditional acupoints prescription as the control group.Mainly, the degree of pain was observed before and after treatment in both groups. The change was then assessed to determine the effectiveness of the treatment. Results:The treatment group had a total effective rate of 96.8%, composed of 12 clinically recovered patients,10 very effective patients,8 effective patients and 1 ineffective patient. The control group had a total effective rate of 70.0%,composed of 4 clinically recovered patients,9 very effective patients,7 effective patients and 9 ineffective patients. Conclusions:The treatment group had a significantly higher overall effective rate than the control group(p<0.05)Conclusions:Treating migraine headaches with temple three-needles significantly reduced the level of pain in the patients.
