Background:Urinary incontinence refers to the involuntarily loss of urine from the body.It may leak, drip,or rush out,and may also be accompanied by a continual urge to go to the bathroom or a feeling of fullness in the bladder. It is one of the most common menopause symptoms;more than 40%of menopausal women suffer from incontinence. All types of incontinence are treatable, but they are mainly medical, biofeedback, and surgical measures. Medications include hormonal treatment, which often bring about harmful side-effects.Acupuncture as a complementary approach has played an important part in relieving menopausal symptoms due to its high effective rate and quality of minimal side-effect.Objective:To investigate the curative effect of catgut implantation in the treatment of urinary incontinence in menopausal women.Method:A total of 60 menopausal patients diagnosed with stress incontinence were randomly divided into treatment(catgut implantation) and control(medication) groups. The change in urinary incontinence was observed by performing the Pad Test.Results:1.The mean leakage significantly decreased after treatment in both groups (p<0.05).The change in the treatment group, however, was more significant than the control group(p<0.05).2.The quality of life was assessed by performing the measure of handicap urinary(MHU) questionnaire, and found that the before and after treatment change in both groups were significant(p<0.05);while that of the treatment group was more significant than the control group(p<0.05). 3.The International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire(ICIQ) is a brief and robust measure for estimating the severity of incontinence. All the patients underwent the test and found that both protocols were effective in relieving the symptoms(p<0.05);however,the effect of the catgut implantation protocol showed more significance than the control group (p<0.05).4.The effective rates in both groups were determined after treatment. The treatment group had 8 clinically recovered patients,16 effective cases, and 8 ineffective cases;a total effective rate of 80.0%.The control group had 5 clinically recovered patients,14 effective cases, and 12 ineffective cases;a total effective rate of 63.3%.The rates were statistically different(p<0.05),the treatment group was more effective than the control group. Conclusions:The combined therapy of catgut implantation and moxibustion is effective in the treatment of urinary incontinence in menopausal women.
