Object To study the relationship between testosterone levels and carotid intima——media thickness(IMT) in men. Methods The age,BMI,blood pressure, blood sugar, total testosterone(TT),free testosterone(FT),high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),serum total cholesterol(TC),triglycerides(TG),lipoprotein(a) were analyzed in 78 high carotid artery IMT patients and 73 healthy age-matched controls.Associations between testosterone and carotid intima——media thickness(IMT) were assessed by multinmial regression analysis. Results To cmpared with the control group, the case group had significant decrease in serum FF,HDL-C,t-PA(P<0.05) and significant increase in BMI,SBP,TC,TG,LDL-C, Lpa,IMT,PAI(P<0.05).In pearson relative analysis,FT had obvious postive correlation with serum HDL-C,t—PA(p<0.05),while negative correlation with age,BMI,SBP,LDL-C TC,Lpa,PAI-1,IMT(p<0.01).Multinmial regression analysis confirmed that free testosterone(FT),triglycerides(TG) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) were independent factors correlated with carotid IMT.Conclusions Serum free testosterone has associations with carotid intima——media thickness(IMT) in men, free testosterone could probably be a independent factor correlated with the carotid atherosclerosis.
