Polygonum suffultum Maxim. belongs to Polygonum genus, Polygonaceae family. The genus Polygonum is composed of more than 200 species all over the world. There are more than 120 species in China mainly distributing in the subtropical zone, and 81 species were recorded to have medicinal uses in traditional Chinese medicine. The rhizome of Polygonum suffultum Maxim. is used in folk medicine for the treatment of bleeding wound, bone fracture, etc.The characteristic constituents in this genus are flavonoids and anthraquinone derivatives. Compounds isolated from the plants of Polygonum genus include flavonoids, anthraquinone derivatives, stilbene derivatives, sucrose phenylpropanoid esters, lignans, steroids and other constituents. There have been few reports on the chemical constituents of Polygonum suffultum Maxim.. Therefore, we have conducted studies on the chemical constituents of the title plant.Eleven compounds were isolated from the ethanol extracts of the rhizome of Polygonum suffultum Maxim. employing solvent extraction, silica gel, polyamide, sephadex LH-20 and macroporous resin column chromatography, recrystallization, along with silica gel and polyamide TLC analysis. The structures of ten compounds were identified on the basis of chemical and spectral methods including NMR, MS, and comparing with authentic samples. They are neohop-13(18)-en-3β-ol (PSE-C1), neohop-13(18)-en-3β-yl acetate (PSE-C2a), hop-17(21)-en-3β-yl acetate (PSE-C2b), gallic acid (PSE-C3), sitosterol (PSE-C4), dauosterol (PSE-C5), epifriedelinol (PSE-C7), friedelin (PSE-C8), neochlorogenic acid n-butyl ester (PSB50-C1), myricetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (PSB50-C2). All the compounds were isolated from the title plant for the first time except PSE-C3, this is the first report of PSE-C1, PSE-C2a, PSE-C2b, PSB50-C1 and PSB50-C2 from the genus Polygonum, and the compound PSE-C2a is a new natural product. In this thesis, the studies on chemical constitutes and bioactivities of Polygonum in the past 20 years were also summarized.
