Objective : to evaluate the efficacy of the extractable implantable electrical stimulation with different shapes of electrodes in promoting regeneration of the transected rat sciatic nerve and their mechanical injuries. Methods : after establishing 48 rat models of transected sciatic nerve with different shapes of electrode(the point electrode for 12;the 1/4 of a circle electrode for 12;the circle electrode for 12) on them and with no electrode for 12 as normal control, electrical stimulation is performed in the following 20 days continually with 30 minutes per day, finally to perform electrophysiological exams(LAT,AMP,MNCV) morphological and histological exams(pathology of the sciatic nerve and muscle ) on the fourth and tenth week. Results : the statistics of electrophysiology and histology in the group with the point and 1/4 of a circle electrode are superior to those of the other two groups both on the fourth and tenth week. Besides, the point and 1/4 of a circle electrode are easier to be removed and cause less mechanical injuries to the nerve after electrical stimulation. Conclusions : this brand-new kind of extractable implantable electrical stimulation can facilitate the regeneration of sciatic nerve in rats, among them the group with the point electrode group and 1/4 circle electrode group show better results and cause less mechanical injury than that of the other two groups.
