Objective:To identify the main factors affecting concomitant depression in adult patients with epilepsy. Methods:Adult patients with epilepsy were collected and analyzed in our hospital from August 2006 to January 2008.All subjects were evaluated by Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HAMD) and recorded clinical and demographic data. Univariate and multiple regression analysis were used to determine factors affecting depression in adult patients with epilepsy. Results:The research was conducted on 82 adult patients with epilepsy(51 males and 31 females),aged 18 to 62 years, average age:31.38±9.32,with total time of illness ranging from 1 to 30 years. In this study 40 adult patients with epilepsy out of 82 suffered from concurrent depression(48.8%);20 of them had mild depression (37.7%) and 15 adult patients had moderate to severe depression(18.3%),7 of adult patients had the thought of suicide(18.3%).After the binary logistic regression, the most related factors are seizure frequency(P:0.003;OR:1.555),duration of epilepsy(P:0.009;OR:1.020), economic status(P:0.007;OR:0.157),education level(P:0.036;OR:0.320) in adult patients with epilepsy.Conclusion:①Depression in adult patients with epilepsy is a serious medical problem since it afflicts almost one half of all patients in this study(48.8%).②Seizure frequency, duration of epilepsy, economic status, education level are correlated with adult epilepsy patients with depression.③Gender,age,marital status, the type of employment and the type of antiepileptic drugs may be not factors that influenced depression in adult patients with epilepsy.
