Clinical Study On The Efficacy And Sex Hormone Level Of Dry Eye Treated With Chinese Herbs

Objective: Based on the etiology and pathogenesis of dry eye, the method of nourishing the liver and kidney, regulating the balance between yin and yang were taken to treat dry eye with Chinese herbs combining Hypromellose Eye Drops. Meanwhile the influence of the treatment on patients'sex hormone level was detected, which could provide a novel clue and therapeutic method to dry eye. Method: The treatment of Chinese herbs along with Hypromellose Eye Drops was applied to the Experimental Group(EG) of 27 cases(54 eyes), while simple Hypromellose Eye Drops was applied to the Control Group(CG) of 15 cases(30 eyes). A comparison of symptom grading evaluation and observation of the change of testosterone levels of 10 cases in the EG before-and-after-treatment were conducted while Schirmerâ… Test, tear film break-up time (BUT) and fluorescent staining(FL). Result: The effective rate of treatment of the EG is 87%, with evident improvement in all the observed targets after treatment (P<0.01) and better than that of the CG(P<0.01). Majority of the patients in the EG claimed an alleviation of subjective symptoms. The testosterone levels in 8/10 patients with dry eye were elevated to some extent. Conclusion: The combination of the'eye adjustment and moisturizer decoction'and Hypromellose Eye Drops demonstrates an evident effect on dry eye and plays a certain role in improving the related targets and subjective symptoms of the patients. It has a relatively ideal effect compared to the simple treatment of artificial tears. Meanwhile the results also show Chinese herbs have the effect of improving patients'testosterone levels.
