Resveratrol is produced by plants as an antifungal chemical. It is found in widely varying amounts in the skin of grapes, in peanuts, berries of Vaccinum species, including blueberries, bilberries, and cranberries, some pines, such as Scots pine and eastern white pine, and the roots and stalks of giant knotweed and Japanese knotweed, called hu zhang in China. Resveratrol was first isolated from an extract of the Peruvian legume in 1974. Resveratrol is produced in plants during times of environmental stress such as adverse weather or ecological attack. A number of beneficial health effects, such as anti-cancer, antiviral, neuroprotective, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and life-prolonging effects have been reported. Resveratrol is found as a constituent of red wine may explain the"French paradox"that the incidence of coronary heart disease is relatively low in southern France despite high dietary intake of saturated fats.In this paper, resveratrol in polygonum cuspidatum was extracted with organic solvent. By compare three different extraction technology,it was found that a circumfluence extraction gave better result. With further design experiments, we found the optimal conditions.Further purification of resveratrol was carried out using macroporous resin-silicon gel cochromatography. The influence of elution liquid, velocity of elution was studied. The concentration of resveratrol was detected by HPLC and MS. The purity of the product was up to 87%. This process of applying macroporous adsorption resin -silicon gel to adsorb and purify resveratrol in polygonum cuspidatum was feasible.
