First, the author defined several concepts of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae. Second,the author made researches on the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae in the historical directions and divided it into seven parts. They were the dynasty before the Qin,Qin and Han Dynasties periods, Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties periods, Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties periods, Song,Jin and Yuan Dynasties periods, Ming-Qing Dynasties periods before the Opium War, the Opium War to the time the People' s Republic of China was founded and the period after the People's Republic of China was founded. The author made a tentative study on the historical background,the prescription books,the important impacts of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae mdae by the influential physicians and the distinguished prescription books and the achievements of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae in different parts. In the seven historical parts, the author also described the developmental overview of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae in a different extent, explored the furious debates among the different academic factions, bewrited characteristics of the medical and cultural exchanges, expounded the developmental history of a certain category presciption and the impacts of the other factors of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae. In addition, there was a close relationship between Chinese materia medica and prescription, so the author appropriately talked about the developmental overview of the science of Chinese materia medica. The author discussed the characteristics of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae in the seven different parts. In the end, the author made the final conclusion and pointed out the main developmental characteristics of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae. The dynasty before the Qin,Qin and Han Dynasties periods—the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae sprouted and came into being; Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties periods—the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae focused on the practicality more than the theory; Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties periods—the gigantic prescription books began to emerge; Song,Jin and Yuan Dynasties periods—the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae developed in the round; Ming-Qing periods before the Opium War—the conjunct development of both the prescription and the pharmacology were paid attention to (especially in the Ming Dynasty),the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae trended to return from wide to refined; the Opium War to the People's Republic of China was founded—the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae inherited,developed and reformed in the face of adversity; the period after the the People's Republic of China was founded—the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae started a new situation with its inheritance,unscrambling and modern research. The author not only convinced that the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae gradually developed and became mature on the basis of extensive clinical practices of the medical experts in different dynasties, but also understood that the development of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae had a close relation with the history background including the factors such as the politics,economy,technology,culture,consciousness and so on, and that the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae had diverse developmental characteristics in different times through his researches of the developmental history of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae. As a result, the author' s researches indicated that the development of the pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae accommodated itself to the development of the history background, absorbed and made use of relevant science of knowledge on its own initiative in order to make itself develop continuously with the progress of the society.
