Objective: To investigate the clinical features of renal cell carcinoma(RCC) in young adults by collecting 31 cases for improving its diagnosis and treatment. Methods: A total of 447 cases of RCC admitted in our hospital from January 1990 to December 2006 were retrospectively studied. Among them, the clinlical data including clinical symptom, sign, diagonosis, operation treatment and survival rate of the 31 cases of RCC in young adults were analyzed and compared with those of the common RCC patients to investigate its clinical feature.Results:1. OF the 31 cases of renal cell carcinoma in young adults, 9 cases were male and 22 cases female, with the ration as 1:2.44. It is obvious that female patients are much more than male patients.2. The patients were divided into two groups which had symptoms or no symptom. There were 10 patients 32.3% without symptoms including 3 male and 7 female and 21 patients 67.6% with symptoms including 6 male and 15 female. The median value of the age in the group without symptoms is 29 years old, while the other group is 32 years old. 3. All of the cases were found out by B type ultrasound firstly. The accuracy of B type ultrasound was 93.5%, while the rate of accuracy of CT was 96.8%.4. The major carcinoma cell type of our cases was clear-cell carcinoma 54.8%, the next was granular cell carcinoma 32.3% and chromophobe carcinoma got 3.1%, mixing cell carcinoma got 9.7%. There were 3 cases of small renal carcinoma 9.7%, others 28 cases 90.3%had diameter more than 3cm.5. It had no significant difference when comparing the 5-years survial rate of renal cell carcinoma in young adults 53.6% with that of RCC in common cases 57.4% (P<0.05).Conclusion:1.Young famel has a higher incidence rate than young male . Of our 31 cases, 9 cases were male and 22 cases female, with the ration as 1: 2.44, which was on the contrary of common people renal cell carcinoma sex proportion.2. The pathobiology cell type of renal cell carcinoma in young adults which was clear-cell carcinoma mostly had no special with common people renal cell carcinoma. B type ultrasound was a convenient, shortcut, effective way for imaging examination. Radical nephrectomy (RN) would still be the main treatment modality, and nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) for renal cell carcinomacould be an alternative in suitable young patients.
