Objective: To analyze HOAs (higher order aberrations) and CS(contrast sensitivity) in emmetropic eyes, and supply the data to evaluate their clinical significance and relationship. Methods: To check volunteers from navy or air-force (40 cases ,80 eyes, all males, mean age 21.9 years±3.4 [SD], 16 35 years). Uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA) was 1.32±0.30 (1.0~2.0) . Aberration and CS analysis was based on the Tscherning theory from the waveLight company (Germany) and from KONTRASTOMETER BA-4 ( BKG MEDIZIN TECHNIK,Germany).Results:①No significant difference was shown between the left and right eyes.②No significant relationship but a negative trend was shown between C3-1 and UCVA.③There was a negative relationship between C3-1and astigmatism(P<0.05)/spherical equivalence (P<0.05). There was a positive relationship between C40 and sphere (P<0.05). No significant relationship was shown between RMS3-6/RMSh and sphere/ astigmatism/ spherical equivalence ( P>0.05 ) .④There was a negative relationship between C3-1/RMS3 and age(P<0.01/P<0.05),but no relationship was shown between C40 and age(P>0.05).⑤No significant difference was shown between 4 mm and 7mm pupil diameter in C3-1(P>0.05),but there was a significant difference in C40 (P<0.01)and in RMS3/RMS4/RMSh(P<0.01).⑥There was a positive relationship between C3-1and WOG (CS coefficient without glare)( P<0.05) . No significant relationship but a positive trend was shown between C3-1 and other CS coefficients.Conclusions:①For HOAs in emmetropic eyes , there are no significant differences between the left and right eyes .②HOAs has a negative relationship with age and a positive relationship with pupil size(age<40 years).③There is a trend that with a decrease in C3-1 ,as well as more negative C3-1 is, much better UCVA and CS become.
