Purpose:With the development of micro-operative technique for the past few years, more and more attention has being paid to intraocular operation.Posterior chamber intraocular lens to correct high myopia is more consistent with intraocular physiological functions. In this study, we use implantable contact lens( ICL , Staar Surgical—AG Inc) to evaluate the efficacy, safety and stability of posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens implantation for the correction of high myopia. Methods:This study included 12 eyes of 6 patients with a mean age of years(27.16±5.38)from October 2006 to December 2007.An implantable contact lens (ICL V4, Staar Sugical Inc.)was inserted.Patients were examined preoperatively and followed at 1 day,2 day,1 week,1 month and 3 months postoperatively. The examination content included the uncorrected visual acuity, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA),slit-lamp examination, refraction, intraocular pressure (IOP),endothelial cell morphometry, ultra- sound biomicroscopy (UBM),contrast sensitivity (CS),etc. Surgical implantation was performed through a 3.2 mm clear corneal sutureless incision using paraocular aneshesia. The mean follow-up period was 5.6 months(ranged 3 to 12 months)for refractive data and the complications. Results:Successful implantation was achieved in all patients. Postope ratively, all eyes had a significant increase in uncorrected visual acuity. The mean uncorrected visual acuity was (1.23±0.26 ), and the mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was(1.52±0.30)at 3 months after the operation. The refraction and intraocular pressure(IOP) remianed stable with a statistically insignificant change (P>0.05) at each interval during the follow-up.The corneal endothelium is stable in 3 months. The space between the intraocular lens(IOL) and endothelium or lens in eyes is safe and enough big by studying the intraocular location and anatomy of IOL using ultrasound biomicroscopy(UBM).There is significant difference between those postoperative and preoperative on contrast sensitivity under all conditions.Visual phenomena, mainly glare and halos, is scare, and all patients are satisfied with the operation. Conclusion:Posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens implantation appears to be an effective, safe and reliable method for the correction of high myopia.Follow-up study is still required for the evaluation of long-term results.
